By the end of the trading session, the pharmacy's stock declined almost 23% on heavy volume. Yes, it was a horrible day in the market overall, but don't blame the market at large. Rite-Aid is simply a company to avoid, and its latest earnings data show why.

According to the AP, Rite-Aid booked a loss of $0.20 per share for its fiscal first quarter versus a profit of $0.04 per share in the year-ago period. There are some growing pains going on here, since Rite-Aid is attempting to integrate its purchase of Brooks Eckerd. That acquisition propelled the company to top-line revenue growth of 48%. Unfortunately, analysts were looking for the company to lose only $0.09 per share. The significant differential made investors feel justified in punishing the stock. Heck, I'll bless the sell-off myself.

It'll be a long time before Rite-Aid finally turns its ship around. The next fiscal year will bring more losses, and with strong competition out there from CVS and Walgreen, the road ahead for management won't be for the faint of heart. This is truly a speculator's stock. I took a look at a post I wrote on Rite-Aid back near the beginning of April. At that time, the stock was priced at about $2.89 per share. As of Thursday's close, the shares were trading for $1.35. The Rite-Aid story belongs in the horror genre, and its stock is best left to those professionals who don't mind losing money. Individual investors? This company isn't for you, in my opinion.

Disclosure: I don't own any company mentioned; positions can change at any time.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Walgreen misses earnings expectations, but it's still good for the long-term

Filed under: Earnings reports, Wal-Mart (WMT), Walgreen Co (WAG), CVS Corp (CVS), Rite Aid Corp (RAD)

Walgreen (NYSE: WAG) reported sluggish Q3 numbers last week. Net sales increased a little under 10% to $15 billion. Net income increased a whopping two pennies to 58 cents per diluted share (the term "whopping" is used here sarcastically). According to this article, Walgreen met top-line expectations but missed the bottom-line call by a penny.

Gross margin remained relatively stable, but the net margin dropped to 3.8% in the quarter compared to 4.1% in the previous year's similar period. But same-store sales increased 3.4%, which is a decent number. Also, operational cash flow jumped over 19% to $2.5 billion. That's excellent; it's always good to see cash coming in. It helps mitigate the tepid earnings expansion. Walgreen did well with its cash-flow statement last time around as well. Walgreen management cited the economy as a factor in its earnings stats and highlighted the fact that it cut back on expenses, including advertising. Making sure costs don't get out of hand is important, but I'd be careful about eliminating too much of the advertising budget. Competing with CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS), Rite-Aid (NYSE: RAD), and the pharmacy at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) obligates brand-building and differentiation.

Walgreen's Q3 wasn't beyond awesome, but it was solid enough. The stock is only down slightly as I write this. As a long-term play on the need for drugstores, it's not a bad way to go.

The company has provided positive surprises in four of the past five quarters -- by two cents in the previous quarter.

Based in Deerfield, Ill., Walgreen is the largest drug store chain in the U.S. in terms of sales, and has more than 6,200 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. In the past year, the company's revenues were $53.7 billion and its net income totaled $2.0 billion. Its long-term EPS growth forecast is 14.0%, which is less than the retail industry average, as well as less than that of rival CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS).
The share price is up 4.0% since the beginning of the year, and up from 11.6% from a year ago. It trades at a P/E ratio of 20.68. Shares closed Friday at $41.35.

Kroger is expected to report first-quarter net income of 55 cents per share, up 10.9% from the year-ago period, on revenue of $22.3 billion. The company has provided positive surprises in the past five quarters -- by a penny in the previous quarter.

Cincinnati-based Kroger is the nation's largest grocery chain, though Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) sells more groceries. Kroger has more than 3,600 stores, including supermarkets, department stores, and convenience stores. In the past year, the company's revenues were $70.2 billion and its net income totaled $1.2 billion. The company's long-range EPS growth forecast is 10.6%, less than the industry average and slightly less than that of rival Safeway (NYSE: SWY). The consensus recommendation of analysts remains to buy Kroger.

The share price is up 4.7% in the past three months, but has fallen 11.9% from a year ago. It trades at a P/E ratio of 15.92. Shares closed Friday at $26.61.

It is. Many major ice cream makers, hit by higher dairy costs, have shrunk their standard containers to 1.5 quarts from 1.75 quarts, about 1 cup less. As packaged goods makers' costs rise, they eventually have just two choices: raise prices or put less stuff in the package. While most are trying a price boost first, a growing number are shrinking the contents of their packages -- from Frito Lay's chips to Dial soap to Dreyer's ice cream. Other shrinking products include Hellmann's mayo down to 30 oz. from 32 oz., Cheerios & Wheaties have shrunk 1.5oz., Bounty papertowels down to 60 from 52 towels and more.
Shoppers beware: Products shrink but prices stay the same - USATODAY.com

Safeguard Your Home Before a Disaster Hits
Disaster has stormed through the midwest with record rains and through homes from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean, with over 1,000 tornadoes reported so far this year. These include coin counters, kiddie rides, bulk vending machines, skill-crane games and point-of-sale terminals. The firm also provides self-service DVD movie rental/purchase kiosks and provides money transfer services, prepaid wireless products, stored value cards, payroll cards and prepaid debit cards. Coinstar products and services are distributed through more than 53,000 retail stores. Corporate clients include Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Kroger (NYSE: KR) and Walgreen (NYSE: WAG).

The company surprised the Street last week, when it reported Q1 EPS of 18 cents and revenues of $190.5 million. Analysts had been expecting four cents and $182.7 million. Management also guided Q2 EPS to 8-15 cents (12 cent consensus), Q2 revenues to $200-$210 million ($202.19M consensus), FY08 EPS to 60-75 cents (57 cent consensus) and FY08 revenues to $850-$900 million ($829.83M consensus). DA Davidson subsequently upgraded the stock to "buy".

The CSTR share price popped on the news and then settled into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers recommend the issue with five "strong buys", three "buys", four "holds" and one "underperform". Analysts expect an 18% average annual growth rate, through the next five years. The CSTR Price to Sales ratio (1.85), Price to Book ratio (3.32), Sales Growth rate (43.99%) and EPS Growth rate (100.00%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded between $24.69 and $38.00. A stop-loss of $31.45 looks good here.

The editor of Dow Theory Forecasts adds, "However, Walgreen's long-term prospects remain appealing, and the stock is attractively valued. Walgreen is a Long-Term Buy." Here is his review.

"Big, strong, and healthy, Walgreen is the largest U.S. drugstore chain as measured by revenue and the second-largest based on store count.

"The company operates more than 6,200 stores in 48 states and Puerto Rico and plans to boost the count to 7,000 by fiscal 2010 ending August. Walgreen sees long-term potential for about 13,000 U.S. stores. Prescriptions generate about 65% of total sales, with the rest coming from general merchandise.

"In fiscal 2007, both pharmacy and general merchandise sales growth outpaced the industry average, and Walgreen increased market share in nearly all of its core categories.

"2007 represented the company's 33rd consecutive year of sales growth. Walgreen has expanded beyond pharmacy services with in-store health clinics and a managed-care division.

"Walgreen has not traditionally been an aggressive acquirer, relying mostly on such strategies as building
new stores, entering new markets, and improving customer service. The company has also invested heavily in technology enhancements that improve pharmacy effi ciency and reduce costs.

"But in recent months, Walgreen has made several deals that will broaden its health-care offerings. In September, Walgreen paid $850 million for OptionCare, which specializes in infusion drugs such as
cancer treatments.

"The deal was the largest in Walgreen's history and made the company the nation's largest independent specialty pharmacy. The specialty-pharmacy market is growing much faster than the overall pharmacy market.

"In March, Walgreen agreed to acquire I-trax and Whole Health Management, which operate health centers at corporate offices, paying $260 million for I-trax and an undisclosed amount for Whole Health. After those deals close, Walgreen will operate more than 500 worksite and retail health centers in 40 states, including its in-store clinics.

"The weakening economy and increasing competition have slowed growth of both pharmacy and general merchandise sales in recent months. Walgreen has also cut back on advertising spending to reduce expenses, and some investors worry about the affect on market share.

"However, the company continues to offer customers more convenience and new services. Expanded store operating hours, a growing number of free-standing stores with drive-through pharmacies, and in-store digital photo-fi nishing labs should boost customer traffic.

"The stock looks cheap relative to its solid growth outlook. At 15 times estimated year-ahead earnings of $2.36 per share, Walgreen trades well below its five-year average forward P/E of 23. Consensus estimates project per-share-profit growth of 9% in fiscal 2008 ending August and 12% in fiscal 2009, targets the company should be able to beat."

Here, the editor of The DRIP Investor offers five stock that both rank high for their social responsibility and also stand out based on more traditional earnings and valuation analysis.

"The Social Investment Forum estimates that more than one in every 10 dollars under professional management in the U.S. is involved in SRI investing. What is driving the growth in SRI?

"One factor is the increasing numbers of women and younger investors among the investor populace have fueled demand for SRI investments.

"In addition, we see an increased focus on environment, social, and corporate governance issues. Further, widely publicized stories concerning global warming as well as various corporate governance issues, have caused many investors to reconsider how they deploy their investment capital.

"The most prominent of all the SRI market indexes is the KLD Domini 400 Social Index. The index employs a variety of environmental and social screens when selecting components. In a nutshell, the index selects companies that have positive environmental, social, and governance performance.

"To be sure, I've always been a bit tentative about the concept of SRI investing. It seemed to me that to pick stocks solely on SRI criteria left out an important part of the equation - investment merit.

"Because traditional SRI investing often excludes important investment factors such as earnings and valuation. Still, plenty of stocks exist within the SRI framework that adhere to SRI principles yet offer outstanding return potential for investors."

Chuck Carlson adds that five stocks that rank highly according to SRI are also members of his Editor's Portfolio, which is determined by investment merit. They are Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP), Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Regions Financial (NYSE: RF), and Walgreen (NYSE: WAG).

In addition, he adds, "Among other favorites, I especially like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) as a stock offering a compelling buying opportunity. I think Wall Street's concern that Microsoft will overpay for Yahoo is overshadowing the company's solid growth prospects. I expect the stock to move sharply higher once there is greater clarity on the Yahoo deal."

Financial Stocks to Love
The subprime mortgage meltdown and resulting credit crisis have slammed financial stocks recently. But there are still some diamonds in the rough. They include Berkshire Hathaway, RBS, AFLAC, Raymond James and BOK.
Financial stocks we love - CNNMoney.com

Big Mac's Local Flavor
Once vilified for pushing America on the world, McDonald's lets countries invent their own buns, bags, and business practices. The top rated stores include Medicine Shoppe for independents, Publix for supermarkets and Kmart for mass merchants. America's Most Junk-Food Obsessed Cities
Craving a Twix bar? If you live in Oklahoma City, chances are you're in good company. It tops our list of American cities with residents that buy the most junk food per capita. Pittsburgh, Memphis, Tenn., Little Rock, Ark., and St. Louis round out the top five. The data provided by The Nielsen Company, a New York-based market research firm which looked at eight categories--cookies, ice cream, frankfurters, carbonated sugar drinks, candy, snacks, pizza and bakery goods. The average of the CDI rankings of these categories produced the list of the cities that are the most junk food-obsessed.
America's Junk Food-Obsessed Cities - Forbes.com

Online Coupons for Offline Discounts
Consumers on the lookout for savings turn to the Web to find coupons for staples including laundry detergent, frozen meals, and clothing. They were very good, and they reminded me that I probably need to throw a drugstore chain's stock in my core portfolio as a long-term play on the increasing health-care needs of the baby boomers (and every other demo, for that matter).

Looking through the reported growth rates, you can see that we're talking best-of-breed here. Revenues were up over 60%, and adjusted earnings per share increased over 18%, coming in at $0.55. The Caremark merger has obviously proven to be a good move. Same-store sales rose 3.9%, benefited in part by the early appearance of Easter in March.

According to earnings.com, CVS Caremark basically matched earnings expectations. That's okay, though, I don't think you can hold it against this big brand name. As of this writing, CVS is near a 52-week high. Buying at the 52-week high is always a dicey thing, but if you plan on holding for years, it wouldn't be that much of a concern. Shorter-term traders would need to wait for a pullback. But I like the first quarter results for CVS, and I think the stock is poised to do well over time. And like I said at the beginning, this really may be a stock for the core portion of an individual's investment program -- a true buy-and-hold idea.

Nevertheless, I don't mind checking in on it from time to time when there is news about it. Yesterday, the pharmacy released sales data for the month of March (the data excludes the Brooks Eckerd acquisition). Did they change my outlook on Rite Aid at all?

No, although I should say that this wouldn't be necessarily expected; a month of same-store sales data isn't the killer app of an overall investment thesis for a retail idea. Still, shareholders follow comps religiously, and I have to say that Rite Aid's number was nothing to write home about. A 2.6% gain in sales at stores open more than a year is weak. Walgreen (NYSE: WAG) said earlier in the week that its comparable-store revenues grew by a much better 4.4%. Walgreen was able to take advantage of the Easter shopping excitement in a much better fashion than Rite Aid. It all comes down to brand and execution; Walgreen, as well as CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS), are more valuable in terms of both those attributes.

I may not have been bowled over by Walgreen's recent earnings release, but I can tell you that Rite Aid's share price is downright frightening and telling -- it's telling people to stay away, or at least understand that it may be essentially like buying a lottery ticket (it closed at $2.89 yesterday). Rite Aid's same-store sales were weak, and so is its investment potential.

Net sales grew by a very decent 10%. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $0.69 versus $0.65 in the year-ago period; this represents a bottom-line gain of 6%.

Considering some of the other action on Wall Street on Monday -- the increased offer for Bear Stearns, the approval of the Sirius/XM merger -- Walgreen's earnings report was simply an okay event, even though the stock closed up around 5% on the news. Same-store sales may have increased 4.7%, but the retailer sold a lot of items with lower margins this time around, thus reducing its gross-margin metric by 14 basis points (the release did cite a big shift to pharmacy sales in the quarter as having negatively impacted margins). So Walgreen needs to work on its non-pharmacy revenues. One cool thing from the report is the jump in net cash from operations -- that number increased by 10%.

Walgreen, which competes with CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE: CVS) and Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD), isn't a bad way to play the long-term drug-retailing business. To be sure, baby boomers -- as well as everyone else -- will always need to visit drugstores on a go-forward basis. It's the company that can capture a significant amount of non-pharmacy sales that will prosper the most. Walgreen and CVS are excellent brand names in this sector -- I'm not so keen on Rite Aid, though (take a look at the stock price and see if you think the company might be cheap-for-a-reason, as they say).

Then, we had some good news from the ailing housing sector. Not that anyone is calling a bottom in the sector yet, but February's existing-home sales actually increased and came in above expectations.

The result? Wall Street is rising, with the Dow industrials climbing over 200 points (211 as I write this). The broader S&P 500 is not shying from the rally either, soaring 1.8%, and the Nasdaq composite is up a cool 2.75%.

It is no surprise then to find that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) actually set a new 52-week high today, climbing to $54.15 before settling back a bit at $53.76, or 1% higher. While no specific news is driving Wal-Mart at the moment, its stock has seen nice price movement lately, as many have bet the discount retailer would fare well in a slowing economy / recession.

Theflyonthewall.com believes that the breakout is technical, saying that after the $51.50-$52 level served as a "major overhead resistance area for 3 years and was a major support area for the 2 years prior," WMT could break out if it climbed above that level. Not only that, but "breakouts of this type, which have developed over a long period of dull range trading, often produce extreme and persistent movement in the direction of the breakout." Meaning, that if the stock doesn't revert back, we could see WMT shares gain strong upward momentum.

While perhaps not breaching 52-week records, other retailers are performing well today too. Continued falling commodity prices have eased inflation concerns, putting retailers back in favor. Target (NYSE: TGT) shares are climbing nearly 2.5%; Walgreen (NYSE: WAG), which has reported a 5% earnings growth, is seeing its shares rise over 5.3%; and Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO), another discount store, is soaring over 6%.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Companies at risk, are you bank deposits safe?, cash in on lower rates - Today in Money 3/24

Filed under: Wal-Mart (WMT), XM Satellite Radio (XMSR), Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI), McDonald's (MCD), Walgreen Co (WAG), Johnson and Johnson (JNJ), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (KKD), Blockbuster Inc 'A' (BBI), Money and Finance Today, Boston Scientific (BSX), Tiffany and Co (TIF), Sears Holdings (SHLD), Comcast Cl'A' (CMCSA), Verizon Communications (VZ), Wendy's Intl (WEN), Washington Mutual (WM), Wells Fargo (WFC), Time Warner Cable (TWC), Bear Stearns Cos (BSC)

In the News:

Will McDonald's Buy Wendy's? Wal-Mart Nab Sears?

Some believe the current financial crisis is the most serious since the Great Depression and if so some of the largest companies in the country could be taken over and cease to be independent public corporations. Huge firms with vulnerable businesses, competitive pressures, and weak balance sheets may end up being takeover targets. Here is 24/7 Wall St.'s predictions of possible takeovers that could happen in the near future if the current crisis persists. They include McDonald's buying Wendys, VW acquiring Ford Motor, Wal-Mart getting Sears, Wells Fargo buying out Washington Mutual, J&J nabbing Boston Scientific and more.

Companies at Risk

Already this year, 24 public companies with assets worth $9.9 billion have filed for bankruptcy protection. Things will likely get much worse. If S&P is right, that could mean as many as 74 additional defaulting companies within the next 12 months. While nobody knows exactly which companies will default and which will turn themselves around, S&P's latest list of its "weakest links" shows companies that have the lowest credit ratings and face a strong possibility of additional downgrades. There are now 93 U.S. companies on the list, including some household names, such as Eddie Bauer, Sbarro, Guitar Center, Blockbuster, Six Flags, Krispy Kreme and Linens 'n Things.
